Living Simply

The Amish are one of the fastest growing population groups in the nation. Big Valley’s Amish community is estimated to number around 5,400 people, spread across 36 church districts – making it the second largest community in the state, and one of the ten largest in the nation.

As a community, they choose to forgo many of today’s modern conveniences in favor of a simpler life, more focused on family and community. A strong work ethic is instilled at a young age and their schooling focuses on practical knowledge.

Big Valley is home to several distinct groups of old order Amish – differentiated by their buggy colors. You will see white-tops, black-tops and yellow-top buggies. The yellow-top are called the Byler Amish and they are only found in Big Valley.
